I've never really followed the ins and outs of headset standards, and now feel inadequately equipped to choose an offset headset for my frame- existing headset is ZS44 up top- can i use an EC44 instead? A bit of reading suggests I could, but I don't want to make an expensive mistake.

Yeah it's the same dimensions so should fit the cup. Google hope headset chart for all the measurement specs.
