Is this a job for the workshop persuader or will a suitable tool make the job easier..?

(I have just been out bashing away furiously in the shed but to no avail)

I use an old seatpost; hacksaw four slots down about 2-3 inches, then bend the strips out to flare it out a bit, insert 'narrow' end up into the tube, then the strips spring out and rest on top of the cup itself. Hammer- bosh!

You can buy a special tool which is essentially this.

if it really is stuck cut it out with a hacksaw blade.

fred has it right - I use a length of B&Qs finest steel tubing that's long enough for me to hold the frame while I stand and hit the other end of the tube on the ground. Saves bracing the frame against anything too solid & risking denting it

Yup the flared tubing thing does the job. HOWEVER, do not do it barefooted with one of you holding the frame and the other smacking the tube to get the cups out. When the cup does come out and the end of tube flies into your toe it really, really hurts. I had to go for one of those strange hobbly walks whilst swearing profusely

So you were bashing the tube profusely to get something to come out of the end & when it eventually worked. This happened -
