Just rebuild my forks, as I had the headset apart I thought I would re-grease and check it over. The crown race is a little pitted but the 2 bearing cages and bearings are well past there best.

I think I need 1/18" (headset tube is 1/18th) they are both the same size and I measured them at been 40mm diameter with 22 ball bearings.
So were can I get caged bearings from?

that's a 5/32" is that right? I would just replace the whole headset but don't want to buy the gear or take it to my lbs. Can you do a headset replacement with out the expensive tools?

You can but it's a bit of a faff to do without the right tools but it's possible. Sheldon Brown

Just use loose ball bearings. They'll give you a greater bearing surface than caged bearings and they're less likely to snag any pitted areas

Fill the bearing surface in each cup with grease and stick the bearings in until it's full, then remove one or two bearings
