[#1879651]

For my (very old :() Birthday I'm off to the Pyrenees for a three day pass storming epic. Have most of the kit sorted, but need a lightweight but powerful Headtorch.

Have some of the cheap alpkit ones for walking the mutt, but wanted something a bit brighter and more robust.

What's good? Ta.

I have a Petzl Myo XP and it's brilliant - super bright, bombproof, not too heavy and lasts ages. Got it cheap (but new) from an ebay seller. Use mine for night time trail running which is about as tough a test of a headtorch as you can get - works perfectly.

Highly recommended.

Or the new Petzl Tikka XP2,about 75% of the performance of the Myo XP and half the weight.

I like the Tikka xp, ace for trail running, and passable for biking.

My word, agreement on STW! Whatever next. Thanks fellas, I'll go do the eBay thing and see what's what. Old one sounds a better buy in terms of cash, but I'm sure I'll end up with the new one 😉

Hmm, they may have put better LEDs in them by now but I have an expensive Petzl headtorch (Myo 3) from a couple of years ago - the alpkit one is much brighter, and doesn't seem any less sturdy (plus the led on the back is handy imo).

Alpkit [url=

- silly low price £12.50 and top quality unit !!
It's slightly harder on batteries than the petzl, black diamond etc but you can buy a hell of a lot of AAs for the price difference

This would be the alternative to the Myo XP: [url=

HP10[/url]
Same price but key differences are:
Myo XP {3xAA battery pack}: 150 lumens (Boost mode), 85 lumens (maximum level).
Fenix HP10 {4XAA battery pack}: 225 lumens (Boost mode), 120 lumens (maximum level).

I've never used a Myo XP, so can't comment. Basically, if you want super blinding bright, the Fenix is brighter than the Myo XP. The Fenix is a bit heavier tho with the 4xAA battery pack. For MTB, I take the straps off and zip tie the lamp and battery pack to my cycle helmet. The lamp is on a pivot, so you can adjust it to the required angle.

Alpkit Gamma

With you on the Alpkit, yes very good & great value, I use mine a lot, but it's not very bright.

I have a Tesco one also and it's brighter than the Alpkit, not sure how robust it is.
