Looking at upgrading my brakes to deore M596 from my current Hayes 9. However, would i have to upgrade the rotors. ie can i use Hayes rotors with shimano brakes?

I'm in the same boat, but going to SLX M666's. Any one done this?

Not from Hayes specifically - but generally - rotors are inter-compatible.

Only things are techny issues like 183 isn't the same as 180. And some Avid adapters are "different" - they seem to use higher washers to get to the rotor diameter.

Otherwise - you're good to go! (probably)

#Edit - re-reading your Q, MOST probably you're fine. I'd guess 98%.

The hayes rotors have a deeper brake track.. so there's a bit on the inside that'll never get wiped clean. So in the dry they'll be fine, but in the wet they'll take longer to dry and bite. This is the voice of experience speaking ๐Ÿ™‚

Don't worry.. They'll still stop you! It's just worth noting that newer brakes have shallower pads and track width than the older ones.
