[Closed] Hayes brakes - how much clearance?

There seems to be almost no clearance between the disc and pads. How much should there be?
Although the wheel spins freely on the work stand it wouldn't take much movement for them to bind under load.
Any thoughts please?

Thanks

Have you had other disc brakes before to compare against? Clearance is always minimal, even with the SLX I have which claim to have more it can only be fractions of a millimetre. If they're spinning freely then that sounds good to me. Hayes usually have a very immediate bite so I wouldn't think the clearance would be that much.

You won't notice them binding under load whilst riding. It would probably only be flex between the hub and the fork causing the disc to move sideways in relation to the caliper. And that sort of flex should be pretty minimal. And then the disc will flex as it contacts the pad and so you won't notice.

Almost no clearance+free spinning sounds like you have got them pretty spot on.
Once I have faffed with mine I give the wheel a few spins and really haul on the lever to make sure it is all smooth still and consider them done.

the wheel spins freely

really the only criteria that counts. i always have the qr a liitle loose, then push down on the bike when the wheel is on the deck and tighten the qr then, to make sure the wheel sits into the droput properly.

Thanks for those replys - sounds like it is fine then - I was comaring them to the last brakes which were shimano and the clearance was probably about .5mm ( at a guess), and the clearance oin these is so small as to be invisible!
