I've just had to do the same.
Given the 13.5 litre HAWG has been changed to the (£100) 18 litre HAWG NV and still has the flimsy zips (mine broke after 2 years) I opted to get one of the 'freeride' type ones
I got the 11.5 litre (3L bladder) Camelbak Mayham as I wanted something slightly smaller (and longer on my back), though I can actually get more in it than my old HAWG
They also do the 13L (3L bladder) Camelbak Havoc
Both come with really beefy looking zips (unlike the HAWG)

Why replace it?

I love my Ergon but only makes sense when carrying a lot.

I also like Deuter's with the suspended frame/mesh/harness thingy.

Got an Osprey Talon earlier this year.

Doesn't come with bladder but has specific compartment and tube holders for it. Really impressed with the design, details, comfort and quality - not cheap but well worth it IMO

The Dakine ones get really good write ups I think the equiv. to the HAWG would be the Apex or might be Havoc. I bought an Ogio 1350 which is good in all aspects except it moves around on your back a bit too much, so I wouldn't rave about it.

i replaced mine with a wingnut hyper 3. It is much more comfortable, more stable and holds more stuff. I can also get into the side pockets without taking the pack off.

It is however more expensive and looks ridiculous off the bike (and is no use as a 'normal' rucksack for walking about on holiday etc.

Had a Havoc and missed the extra compartments compared to the HAWG.
Look on classifieds, there is a HAWG being advertised on there pretty much new for around £57 IIRC.

I'm with CaptainMainwaring. The Talon is a great bit of kit. My 11 litre one seems much bigger than it states and is very comfy and stable. £50 plus a bladder makes it seam quite cheap against a HAWG too.

i've tried all sorts of packs including the HAWG.

As said above the Wingnut cock "n" balls bag is by far the best for fit and performance.

No matter how much stuff you cram in it as soon as it's on the weight just dissapears.

Where do you get Wingnut bags and are they durable / well made? It's a lot of money.

(Berghaus Freeflow 20)

Berghaus do a great winter rucksack that a few of us use on the local Tuesday night rides, they spread any weight around your back much like the ergon ones, but have the advantage of being much lighter while empty.

If you shop around they can be found for as little as £35.00,Theres no bladder though, but very comfortable and ideal for women or men. 😉

Another vote for the Osprey packs, spot on, well comfy, adn you could lose a weeks shopping in them.

I use a TNF Megamouth (18l) that I find great. The only issue is the front pockets can impede putting stuff in the main pocket but other than that it's my pack of choice

Get another HAWG. I had a Dankine and the bladder leaked and then the bag broke all inside a year (Nomad) - whenever I see them ont he trail 99% have a camelbak bladder in them...

I also have a Osprey pack (Atmos) I probably wouldn't use it for riding, the camelbaks use a heavier gauge of materail and will probably last longer.

There'll be a couple of Wingnut packs up for grabs at singlespeed Euros next April too 🙂

aviemoron - UK Bike Store currently have them in stock. Get in quick cos they get snapped up quickly. In fact I thought there was a problem with these and there wouldn't be any more in the country.

The new Hawg is really good. The new backplate really is comfy. Otherwise a Northface Megamouth is good alternative.

Joe at Summit Cycles said he has some more Wingnuts due in any day now...

I have a Hyper 2.5 (balls, no cock). Best. Pack. Ever!

I'm needing to replace my Deuter Race, and have a few options open to me, one of them is the Talon and the HAWG. Can they both it fit an A4 folder plus a pair of jeans and a top? (I use mine for day rides and commuting). I suspect the HAWG can, as it's an 18L, but I'm wondering about the Talon

[edit]

Thanks.

Just tested my (non NV) HAWG, A4 folder is a bit of a tight fit due to the shape of the pack - depends how full it is really. Have you considered a Camelbak Cross20? When I used to commute to work I used that (need to drive now on account of distance) - it was perfect for a big laptop (complete with built in laptop sleeve), change of clothes, shoes and towel. It also has a rain cover. It's fine off road too. Not sure how many litres it is, but it's bigger than my hawg - i'm guessing 20L based on the name...
