Isn't that what this is really about? Your dislike of our socio economic system?

And what better "social commentary" could there be than riding a $1000 bike over it, while wearing clothes made in a sweatshop by happy little slave kids, filming it with a $500 camera and then posting it on the interwebz.

Sticking it to da man, man!

It's not social commentary, it's not an act of revolution, it's a berk on a bike riding over a car that belongs to another berk. Sadly, it's on the interwebz, so we can all argue about it!

If it was Wayne Rooneys you'd all be laughing.

I'm taking the line that it was a naughty thing to do but as I neither know nor care about neither the 'victim' nor the 'perpetrator' then from my detached perspective I can enjoy it at face value safe in the knowledge that the proper authorities will hang the Jack O'Knaves when the hulabaloo has died down.

As pointed out a few posts ago, its not even that expensive a car in the grand scheme of things...you can pick one up for 60k.

its no more ludicrous than spending £1500 quid on a set of carbon wheels or £900 quid on a group set..

edit...I realise 60k is alot of money...but you see many cars every day that cost that

It's 40 to 67 times as ludicrous. The majority of people can afford a nice set of carbon bike wheels or a top of the range groupset without even noticing that much (plenty of people piss away more than that on depreciation every year in order to own a brand new boring car).

which to me isn't any more obscene than shelling out 7k on a pushbike. How come the lefties on here aren't up in arms every time dirtybiker (for example) publishes a picture of his 2 obscenely expensive (and admittedly lovely) santa cruzs..same principle IMO, ie people spending the money they've earned on stuff they like.

To be fair, the 7k bicycle probably has a far smaller environmental footprint than the lambo.

And plenty of people can afford a 60k car without noticing it..to say its 40 times more ludicrous is deliberately ignoring the fact that a nice car will obviously cost much more than a nice set of bike wheels..relative values of a lambo and enve wheels are similar however, both are a massive extravegance that isn't really required.

Fact is my folks are happy to spend 40 k on a car but think its absolutely ludicrous I spend 2k on a bike, given I could pick one up for 300 quid. I wonder how this thread would go down on a car forum...

smaller environmental footprint

Oh, right. So if it was a brand new Prius, you'd have fired up the pitchforks and rounded up the rider, then?

So now we are imagining he was an environmentalist campaigner taking a stand ?

Amd plenty of people can afford a 60k car without noticing it.

Plenty? Not the majority as is the case for the nice bike wheels? You're talking a far, far smaller subset of people.

to say its 40 times more ludicrous is deliberately ignoring the fact that a nice car will obviously cost much more than a nice set of bike wheels.

Well spotted. I was deliberately ignoring it because relative cost is an irrelevance when discussing how extravagant something is. Presumably you reckon a silver teaspoon is just as massive an extravagance as a 20 bedroom mansion?

edit: actually you probably think the teaspoon is more extravagant - a quick google suggests a you could buy more normal teaspoons for the price of a silver one than the number of normal houses you could buy for the price of the most expensive house sold in this country last year

Between you and flashy you sure nailed his point 😕
He was not even commenting on the original instance and yet both of you made a reply as if he was.

WHY?

Crikey, this forum is full of pillocks. MTBing used to be a cool counter culture hobby. Now it's overrun with people who take themselves way too seriously.

It's a car FFS, a car that cost several hundreds of thousands of pounds no doubt. What a stupid thing to spend that much money on. Come on, the person that owns it, I bet they were laughing aswell. How could they not be? Imganie how much of a tit you'd look making a song and dance about some guy riding a BMX over a car that's cost you several HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS. You'd look a right berk.

Yes plenty..have you not seen the amount of expensive mercs, rangerovers etc that drive around?

I realise far more folks could afford a 5k bike than a 60 k car...however I suspect the majority of folks couldn't afford either. Is it ok for the guy on benefits to mistreat your santa cruz because its an unnecesary luxury, or is it only stuff that you can't afford that you object to?

The point is if you earn 300k per year, a 60k car is no more extrvagant a purchase then 5k MTB when you earn 40k.

I do own a car and you could ride over it if you wanted to for a bit of a laugh. Infact, I'd probably be impressed since it's got a high boot that'd be difficult to hop onto.

Well, one's a car, one's a bike. One's a sum of money that most people could probably save; the other is a sum of money that most people will never see in their lifetime.

Whats counter culture about riding. Bike over a car?
Now, if it were a police car, the PMs convoy or even better an ambulance or fire engine then I'd be properly impressed.
David is a crazy bastard but to be fair could probably ride over a car unlike the rest of us biffers!

🙂

Just had a quick read of the thread; and I guess I agree with some of the sentiment; damaging other people's property etc.

But it's still a mad amount of money to spend on a car

I never realised STW was such a hotbed of rampant communism.

It's a car FFS, a car that cost several hundreds of thousands of pounds no doubt. What a stupid thing to spend that much money on.

Tell us, Tovarishch, what percentage of our state-sanctioned remuneration shall we set aside for personal transportation costs? I am of course assuming that you will assume the role of Comptroller and Auditor General in the glorious People's Socialist Republic of New Britain, come the revolution. You do seem to have some sage advice any time anyone asks on here about spending their own cash, after all.

Seriously. What the hell is wrong with people spending their own money?

Anyway, have we reached a consensus as to whether I need to be outraged or amused by the BMX Lambo action?

it's incredibly elaborate and not something you could knock up in After Effects over the weekend. Not to that standard.

I don't reckon it'd be that hard? It's only a small low quality clip and not incredibly detailed. The only question is why though, not worth the time when you could just go hop over a lambo instead.

Yeah it would. If you started low res you would have massive jaggy pixels all over the place if you tried to chroma key anything in or out, so you'd need to work with decent footage at high res and then down grade to look the way it does.

Wonder if people would feel the same way if this was the car and it was parked outside the same cafe but the person who owned it was a 73 year old man who had worked hard all his life, built up his own company and been able to buy his dream car when he retired.

Still pretty easy to do the latter though isn't it. Still just not sure why you'd go to the time and effort to do it when you could just find pretty much any bmx'er to go hop on a car instead.

Well I think it's awesome. I've fantasised about doing this many a time. I know that I could; I've got a pretty strong bunny hop. There's one street near me where I'd do it. It's very narrow, with cars parked on one side. Going in one direction, cars coming the other way regularly fail to give way to me when I ride on this street, even though they are entering my lane. They seem to assume I will because I'm on a bike. So I play chicken with them and they stop and I go past.

But I've always imagined that as I approach them and they come to a stop, that rather than squeezing past them, I just pop a bunny hop and ride over the buggers. It would be so rad. Maybe I will one day.

Well the capitalist pig deserved it, because... because... because I never developed the life skills necessary to comprehend anything outwith the bounds of my own situation and therefore I see the spending of something in the region of £75k on anything other than clearing my crippling credit card debt and/or mortgage as frivolous to the point of wanton carelessness. 4 legs good, 2 legs bad, something about freeganism, etcetera, etcetera...

Well piemonster nails one part and the other part is that whilst these people are busy spending their "hard earned money" he other side of the capitalist coin is

[img] [/img]

And this
[img] [/img]

Still he has a nice car and one has to have priorities in life about what one cares about. Clearly if you comment on his god given right to ostentatious shows of wealth then you must want to change the world into a Stalinist Gulag.....morality and wisdom in abundance in that argument 🙄

Its easier to call someone a communist and mock them than defend [ morally]the iniquitous spread of wealth within our society/world.

Unfairness always makes me cross. Every parent teaches their child to share fairly. Some of us forget this message as adults.

who had worked hard all his life

The subtle implication of this oft used statement is that if you are poor its because you did not work hard. I dont think that is strictly true. If it were we could all work hard enough and all become Richard Branson. There has to be winners and losers in capitalism as it a pyramid scheme. We cannot all win.

Well that old man would probably be okay with it, so it's fine. If the guy who owned the Lamborghini was okay about it, why would 73 year old Porsche guy be a dick about it? Surely he'd be glad to have someone do a cool trick by jumping a bike on to his property for a video so the BMX guy can be famous for 15 minutes on the internet .So what if it get's damaged. Cars can be fixed, and anyway, you can't "own" stuff.

Your experience? So you were a cleaner, and you've been a CEO for a multinational company have you? Or do you mean that you realise your cleaner works harder than you as a middle managing paper pusher!?

Agree with this, but I'm yet to hear of a convincing alternative. It's been proven time and again that communism doesn't work.
