Had a bit of a mishap while shortening my front brake hose - I pushed one of the pistons right out, introducing lots of air into the system, and requiring a complete bleed ๐ณ
No problem I thought, have the Shimano mineral oil kit already just for such an occasion. However, once I started to add oil to the reservoir I noticed the existing oil (original - never been bled since new) was a yellowy colour, and the new stuff pink! Checked Shimano tech docs for my brakes (M445) and it specifies Shimano SM-DB-OIL, which matches what is says on the bottle I've got.
So, can I just go ahead and add the pink stuff to the yellow - is the only difference the colour - no problem mixing them?
It'll be fine. Generally speaking, mineral oil is mineral oil is mineral oil. Magura, tektro, shimano - all the same stuff pretty much. What changes is what they charge you to dye it a special colour.
pink stuff is Shimano stuff, so all good
Thanks guys. Finished off the job using the pink stuff, and everything seems to be fine - lever is firm, same travel as rear brake. Just left wondering if everyone else's Shimano brakes come with yellow or pink oil originally - ie is it praps a sign that mine have already been bled using something other than the Shimano pink stuff...
