Explains why they have been sanitising trails in the peak district.

They will need the access to put up their pumping rigs.

The UK Government were always going to let fracking go ahead, it's potential for vast amounts of gas which the uk needs & will make billions of pounds in licensing & tax for the Gov as they divide up & sell of blocks of land.

All comes down to good old fashioned money / greed & uk demand for energy, not sure if it's been proved that fracking onshore can introduce chemicals into the natural water course but this will be a huge argument for the local authorities / groups against against it, we were fracking offshore 27 years ago of the coast of Humberside & there was seismic activity from it.

Just a play on words tbh legally. As stated previously, they will not be fracking IN national parks, but can 1200m+ below them.
Just like current coal mines or any underground activity, the actual mine/drill head is IN somewhere but the workings usually fan out for miles.
The depths they are drilling at the risk of affecting ground water sources are minimalistic, they are way below all UK extraction SPZ's. I work in the tunnelling industry and you can't go anywhere near a spz in the UK without years of environmental impact assessments, testing of materials to be left in ground etc...etc.

but a few important metres outside.

anyway, we need to move away from fossil fuels, and now is as good a time as we'll ever have to suck it up and get on with it.

what exactly are we waiting for? we can't just keep going till fossil fuels are exhausted, that'll be far too late. We have to choose to leave them in the ground.

No, lets just festoon the National Parks with windmills instead.

We do need to move away from fossil fuels - but we don't have to use the gas we frack up do we? We can sell it and help fund cleaner forms of energy generation. There is always going to be the need for gas - not just for power generation. Aircraft for a start are moving away from Kerosene fuel to Gas to Liquid fuels - far cleaner.

Why now?

what exactly are we waiting for?

Fusion?
large scale thorium nuclear reactors?
Improvement in battery technology that might make electric cars more viable?

we can't just keep going till fossil fuels are exhausted,

maybe we only need to keep going for another five or ten years, especially if we really do expect a breakthrough in clean fusion

We have to choose to leave them in the ground.

Arguably we would be better spending our money ensuring that existing western power production was gradually replaced and fossil phased out slowly as facilities reached their planned end of life/obsolescence rather than forcing closure earlier than needed. At the same time, that money and effort in building renewables that is duplicating existing western production could transform the lives of billions of people in the second and third worlds, who are right now building dirty fossil fuel power stations at a horrific rate to deal with exploding demand. Not only this, but many of them are in areas where large scale renewables using existing technology are far more viable than in crowded, northern hemisphere europe, e.g.. hot countries close with lots of sunlight for solar and mountainous regions where dams and Hydro would be achievable.

What's the environmental equivelent of champagne socialism? Petrolhead tree-hugging?

Sold your car?

Live in a passive house, that used no concrete to build?
