Considering Phil Liggett doesn't bat an eyelid at pronouncing all the exotic names on the TDF his Welsh is awful! Betsy Co-ed indeed.

We've come a long way, baby. 30km. jeez.
Still, comparing dh courses then and now it's the opposite.

Fantastic! 2 laps of a 30km course is a long way off a modern XC format isn't it?

I like the fact that its sponsored by carlesberg!!!

that would certainly never happen now

when we were leaving the megavalanche saw them marking out the xc route for the french natioanls next weekend, frak me it runs down the same valley as the avalanche cup dh course, im sure you would never see that on a uk xc route and makes our joke of an olympic course look like kiddy stuff

So many faces I know and people I raced against.

I've still got the full pink and yellow Schmoos kit as featured in the vid - I may ride in it at 24/12.

The Aviemore Carlsberg/Grundig event was hardcore and a great laugh. Racing mike Klugge in the go karts was the best.

Phil states that MTB regulation wheels are 26". Is this still the case or could one choose to run 29ers in a world cup race? Or will they be getting their own class?

I'm really glad helmets have got more stylish, even if those crazy colours are all the rage again.

Still fitting in the same outfit 20yrs later is quite a novelty round here certainly ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thats a window into the sport 10 years before I got into it.

I like the tour of the bike - Interesting that in just 20years we've gone from rigid bikes 27 to 33lbs and today's bikes are the same weight with 140mm to 160mm travel!

It was changed a few years back though to my knowledge wheel size rulings were never enforced. Decent size 26" tyres in reality measure over 26".

I think anyone who's ridden the Rothiemurcus course as it is these days would certainly say that "man made shite" is not the word for it- man made yes, but it's technical as a mother trucker.

A lot of the Scottish courses are genuinely hard, and I think the british champs will be a shock to a lot of English riders!

mcmoonter @ 0.59 still going strong.

Cynic-al, was that the year of the huge food fight or the year we won all the raffle prizes?

I joined Schmoos and started racing a few years after that video (in the early 90s) and we changed the strip to a more modern one after Schmoos' death in 2001.

My old-skool neon kit probably dates back to about 1998-1999, and although I still 'fit' in it, it does have some bulges which aren't all that pleasant. (I'm about 2 stone heavier than when I raced a lot. I blame it on the wife and kids....nothing to do with sofas, beer and wine.)

I think it was the second year 1989. Can't remember when the food fight took place, nor winnings.

Nor the Petition to remove the river crossings from Mike Klugge, which Shearer signed "**** off" ๐Ÿ˜€

pete did you see boulder brother at 18s in your second video? Closely followed by his mum with a comb.

Do you remember your handbrake skid into the fence?

Falling into the river and your bike floating off?

Al, Thomas Fishnet was another protester. I nearly got washed away in the Spey crossing, I didnt sign the petition. How many xc races now cross major rivers?

The food fight was in the Coylumbridge Hotel. They had some tosser of an STV MC who everyone took exception to.

I think the raffle was at Strathpeffer the following year. Big Bunny won a bike which he sold to go to Colorado.

Al, it turns out that Stratobiker on here was in his tent as I skidded past it through the fence.

I'll have a look for Older Boulder. Whatever happened to the Boulder Bros?

Wow! What a blast from the past! Well posted Blazin'
I remember it well, in a 'rose tinted' sort of way.
I still have one of the course arrows and a set of results somewhere.
Proper racing that was. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I suppose you've got to do the Trans Rockies Lite or Trans Alp Lite to find a similar gnarly XC course nowadays

Pete you should try current sxc courses. Very technical, though not as long obviously.

Oh no... its all gone wrong.. I am a race criminal...

Mr phil Ligot tells us that the regulations are that a wheel can not be bigger than 26 inches.

And there is silly me riding round with 3 illegal inches casually rolling over stuff like a petty race spiv.

If only I had known... I will now return my medals and ask for 3 years of race fee refunds.

So that's the big wheels... is EPO / IPA still ok?

Wow, what a blast from the past. Sian Roberts in there as well, saw her at MM this year.
I remember doing the Welsh Series races when Schmoo was running them, always half a dozen or so riders in that vile fluoro pink/yellow scheme.

chimptastic, I think I've worked it out.
Are you Gareth's daughter?

crazy-legs, did you ride for a club? I would have been one of the half dozen or so Schmoos riders at most Welsh races in the 90s.

I started doing the NEXT Welsh Series in about 1998 when I was at uni in Cardiff. Think I did 98, 99 and probably 2001 (missed most of 2000 season) Was riding for De Laune CC in Sport cat (then Schmoo moved me up to Expert when I started winning them...) ๐Ÿ˜‰

So, anyone ride the Grundig race at Strathpeffer about that time?

Drove all night to get there, had to ride the qualifier, the course was about 50% rideable and it rained like a biblical event.

Did get to see Tinker Juarez, Ned Overend , Thomas Frischneckt, Tomac and the brit guys close up tho...

1992, according to the web
