has anyone fitted one of the new shadow+ rear mechs with the clutch, was it easy?

I was talking to someone with one fitted (the XTR version) and they told me that after a couple of weeks of riding it had to be sent off to be 're-calibrated'?

how does the mech 'know' the total range of movement needed to take all the gear ranges into account?

They set up just like any normal rear mech. Take a look at the Park Tool how to guide -

The mech knows the range of movement the same as any other mech does. The only difference is the mech is tensioned with a spring inside the clutch housing which is under the little gold knob.

After a while said spring inside the clutch housing goes a bit slack but it can be replaced, hence 'recalibration'.

But that'd suggest that 'after a couple of weeks' the spring needs replacing. Which is a bit of a worry...

Clutch XTR mech has a User-adjustable clutch....see here.

No need to send it away for 'recalibration'.

I retensioned the spring on mine last night, in the garden after four beers using only a 2mm allen key and the tool that comes with the mech, hidden inside the cover you remove to get to the screw. Just make sure you put the mech in small-small combo and turn the clutch lever to 'off' to take all tension out of the mech.

Believe me, it's a piece of piss and takes two minutes
