[#7320491]

All of a sudden I can only access a limited number of websites. All news sites or any of the BBC seems to be unavailable, I've tried on three different devices. I'm worried that my router has been somehow hacked or broken. Does that even make sense? Can that happen?

Ok, what is that and what can I do about it? It looks like I can't access Netflix or iPlayer either, which is of course a crisis beyond all imagining

Mine too. Only just woken up though, so not fully with it. Very confused as to why some stuff loads up very fast and otherwise it says I'm not connected to the Internet.

I'm with Plusnet.

Contact your isp in the first instance.

If they're no help, you could try switching your dns provider on the router to google or open dns. If there's a routing problem however, i dont think there is anything you can do.

According to their website there's planned maintenance by BT for early mornings this week so hopefully it'll be ok soon.

That's excellent help, thanks retro83. It looks like it's the ISP, which is good because I would not know where to start with changing the DNS settings...

Seems like they've broken something then with no reports of issues from BT users. Apparently it went bad around 1.30/2ish according to a housemate.

Changing DNS settings (if that is what it is) is pretty easy on most routers - log on to your router, and look for the two DNS settings (probably 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50 for plusnet) and change one of them to someone else's DNS server - 8.8.8.8

Having two different DNS providers gives some degree of redundancy.

Yes exactly the same here but as above, just change the DNS settings manually in the router page to be Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and all is fine.

Logged into router and can see DNS settings, but can't see a way of changing them?

Yes!

A thread about internet issues is showing in the bike forum. Weird.

You'll usually find that your ISP's DNSs are swifter than Google's. Partly because of relative closeness. Partly because some ISPs cache popular sites to control their own bandwidth demands.

It does make some sense to have your ISP's DNS as your primary and another as secondary. You can check the fastest DNSs for you in a few ways. Namebench is one.

You can login to your router by checking its IP address and usually just put that in a browser address bar. Then login using the user name and password that you will have changed from the default of 'admin' and 'password'.

You can also set DNS preferences on your computer.

Cheers for the DNS fix. Lets see how long it takes them to get their act together.

I've noticed that google is also inaccessible, which makes doing anything to fix the problem crazy hard! ๐Ÿ™‚

We've had trouble with our internet for the last couple of days. It'll work for a few minutes then stop, then come back, then stop.

But all devices are showing as connected via Wi-Fi so I think it's the 'outside to router' part that's not working.

Had an e-mail from my mum this morning telling me that she'd been trying to call but the phone goes straight to answer phone.

We're with Talk Talk. I think I need to give them a call.

Some of plusnet routers don't allow you to set DNS via the web interface, you need to do it via a command line telnet session, which not everyone will be up for!

Plusnet here too - had same issues as above earlier but seems fine now.
Their twitter support feed here seems to suggest issue might be now resolved?
