My brother-in-law's bike gave up at the weekend. It was 16 years old and I think was bought from a supermarket at the time so it's done ok. The rear axle snapped in half!
Anyway he will need a new bike and probably won't want to spend a lot of money on it. I was looking at the police auctions in London (Frank G Bowen runs them) and in the last auction on 3rd July there were LOADS of bikes - mostly rubbish probably but in the catalogue I noticed some Giant, Specialized, Genesis. I was wondering if anyone had ever bought from one of these auctions and whether the bikes tend to go for peanuts or is everyone wise to the value of the bikes now and bids accordingly?
(they also had some rather unusual lots, such as 2 bottles of Stella Artois Cidre - maybe in case you don't win the bike you wanted.)
I bought a giant years ago while at Uni £15 for what would in modern parlance be referred to as a Hybrid. It didn't get nicked in 4 years at Uni (unlike the Scott which I had 2 months before starting and was nicked inside of a month).
Subsequently gave it to my nephew who also got three years at Uni out of it.
Very good value.
I hear there might be a Jones coming up soon.

Ha ha - I was thinking that!
