Usually sort of request... any comments / reviews / recommendation on the below bikes? I'm looking to use it for a mix of everything, longer rides, trail centre and maybe even some bike packing. I won't be smashing the downhills either so looking for something which is good to ride on the flats and can climb ok too.

Genesis Tarn
Ragley Piglet
Whyte 909

My original choice was going to be Sonder Broken Road on Cycle2Work but their lead times have put me off after I missed out on their latest shipment. Appreciate all the new choices are a fair bit slacker. Any other options i've missed, with stock available this side of Christmas!!!

Cheers

Most HT that are not Uber gnarcore would suffice and ride well.

My Marin Nail Trail has been doing exactly as you describe for 3 years now. Nice light wheels yet overall tough build mean it's fast to take off, handles really well.

+1, add “Evo” to that.  A bit of a sleeper Orange IMO, very capable and comfortable, with a stunning ride.

Shan

Quite surprised me as a bit of an all rounder. Maybe not bike packing mind ! 🙂

I have an On One Big Dog for exactly that purpose, perfect for me. I suspect if it had a top notch paintjob and came from a boutique brand no one would be any the wiser

Can't comment on the others, but I'm really enjoying my piglet. It's sprightly but capable, despite being built cheap with heavy parts. Also, pink.

Just built up a Piglet for my daughter, very impressed with frame quality, rides well and very YELLOW!

Not those specific models but I’ve had my Whyte 905 for 2 years now and it still makes me grin and can highly recommend it.

The 909 has years of design perfection in the frame. Not a gusset or bracing tube in sight and it can take some hammer. Such a shame they don't do frame only.

No Ragleys available until early 2021 unless you can find a dealer with one left instock.

Had a tarn and a whyte (905). Still have the whyte...no longer have the Tarn. The whyte is a compliant, fun, well thought out bike that does everything very well. I found the Tarn a bit uninspiring if I am honest. Perfectly fine but not grin inducing and just a bit of a plodder.

Tarn 29 slowly getting to like it .fancied tying steel but didnt realise it was going to be solid steel. possible wheels (alex rims and maxis tyres) would make a big difference? similar to superstu ^^ i spose

I got a Tarn 29 too, as an alternative to the full sus, and I love it. On descents it feels really planted and it rides everything very happily.
It is heavy and like jag61 I think a fair bit of that is in the wheels. Some day it will get some lighter ones, though I'm not really tempted by 27.5+
But this is my short ride bike, so 'train-heavy/race-light'. Except I don't race...

I just ordered an On One Scandal as an XC alternative to my enduro'd FS.

It's replacing a much-loved Lynskey 456Ti.

I've got a Whyte 905 that I bought for the same purpose as you're planning, and I've found it a little underwhelming. It's superb fun on the downhills and at trail centres, amazingly capable and confidence inspiring when things gets steep. But for long days in the hills and XC I find it sluggish, tiring to ride and a real dog on flatter swoops xc trails. IT also gives me persistent back-ache on anything longer than about 3 hours, no matter how I set it up. Considering chopping it in for something bigger and narrower wheeled, a bit lighter and maybe shorter lengthwise. I'm never going to set the jump lines and bike parks alight, but it would be nice to have something that rolls faster and climbs better on the proper 'into the wilds ride'. I'm eyeing up the new Pipedream Sirus when they get a demo bike out, or a Solaris MAX or even the new steel Bird 29-er, again when the demo bike hits the markets.
