Bizarrely , I am sitting in my office trying on my old RaceFace Leg and Elbow armour from years ago - on the basis that I might need it for Morzine. But comfortable and easily forgettable , it isn't.
A question from those in the know / who have experience:
On the basis that I doubt I will be doing much more than Green and Blue runs ( I am 62 and whilst closer than most of you to meeting my maker, not in a great hurry to bring the date forward) - would I need it?, or will my normal ( and comfortable) Alpinestars elbow and knee protectors suffice?
Thanks
It depends really, does knowing you've got less protection slow you down? Will you enjoy it less is you're consciously easing of the throttle a bit?
^ That I cannot answer at the present
It's not that gnarly, especially on the greens and blues. They are roughly UK trail centre blues and reds. Very few rocks, mostly mud and roots. The biggest difference is the uplift and a solid week of riding speeds you up and ups the odds of a crash. I'd go with what is comfortable so you actually wear it, your alpinestars stuff sound perfect. I wouldn't say you need a full stormtrooper outfit if you aren't doing jumps/blacks/off-piste
The trails are very mellow, they're just long. I used to wear everything but now I just wear helmet and knee pads and I'm still riding all the black and off-piste stuff.
I know it'll sting more when I come off but I've been there a dozen times with no big injuries. I can't believe I just said that, but it's true. So far...
It's just horrible being wrapped up in body armour when the sun is beating down all day, every day. All the cool kids on DH bikes manage in vests and jorts.
Thanks all!
Alpinestars it is
( PS I will also have a RaceFace G30 shirt with shoulder and back protector)

The Chatel fashion show...
Every year, all the cool quick kids in chatel bike park are wearing a "uniform". It varies year on year.
Vests and jorts was one year, jeans and neck brace the next, then matching pyjamas. Last time I was there, oversized baggy cotton t shirt with back/chest protector on the outside.
I just want to know who coordinates it
I'd disagree with all of the above, sixsixone compression d3o.
It depends, if I was doing big loops that involve some pedaling, lightweight pads, if it's smashing endless runs on the pleney, all the pads.

Agreed. I feel like i'm more likely to crash if I'm uncomfortable. Knee pads, full face and goggles, and gloves depending on how my hands feel
Wear what you feel comfortable in, some will be there in full robocop suits and others in shorts and vests (generally those who don't have bills to pay and are still at an age where you bounce). I'll be in my bigger soft pads (ie not my lightweight knee pads I wear most of the time) and a t-shirt with a spine protector (I'll give up a bit of comfort for some protection of the back).
As usual with armour, you're only thankful you're wearing it when you really need it.
Again- thanks all...
Full robocop will make me look "all the gear and no idea" - so soft pad and the Race Face Flank Core it is ...
And the ancient Fullface obviously ...
Why do you care what anyone thinks?
^ actually, I don't
Good! Then wear armour if you want.
I've seen my lad stack it massively several times this year and come out of it mostly a lot lot better than you'd expect. He wears FF and full armour every single time. Even local woods, is FF.
I wear armour even at places like Swinley, Surrey Hills etc.
Weeksy - it was more asking for advice on what is the minimum I should have - rather than a debate on whether I should / shouldn't. Having never been (in the summer) panic is slowly sinking in.
My old Hard Race Face armour dates from 2009 - and whilst soft on the inside, is bulky - and looks like ice hockey leg and arm protectors.
That said I have decide to upgrade the Alpinestars stuff to either 7iDP Sam Hill stuff or Sweet Protection Knee pads...
Depends on who can get them here on time!
I used to have the full robocop suit but now as it’s Still the full face but elbow and knee pads and a backpack with a spine protector built in. For me it’s the right balance as I’m more into going out for the day and doing the enduro and tech trails than the bike park jump lines
