i am thinking that the Orange Supercross bars on my Orange R8 are possibly too wide for me. I have spent the winter riding my old Rockhopper SS and yesterday I got the R8 out and it felt less agile under me. Could it be the bars need changing ?

Swap the bars from your Rockhopper and see, might just be the setup, maybe swap the stem as well if they are that different, or it could just be different bikes feeling different. At least with swapping you can do it right now and then treat yourself to some shiny new kit knowing it will work, or just cut down your existing bars if it is just the width.
