Looking a set of handbuilt road wheels for my commuting road bike.
Something like 105 hubs on Open Pro rims.

Where in the roadie world will do a good set of wheels like CRC or Merlin

How about trying your local bike shop? My lot build superb wheels, both road and off.

There are quite a few places that build wheels, some of them are very, very good - however, I don't think that they're in the same league as CRC or Merlin.

Ribble.

Or if you want very, very good wheels, Sigmasport in Hampton Wick. They do mail order and their wheels are the best I've ever used by quite some.

Ribble are okay IME and the prices are usually good but there are better builders out there. As for LBS, there are good ones and not so good ones IME.

Have a look at Paul Hewitt for example. Top wheels and a nice bloke.

Paul Herwitt is very good I got some record/ open pro wheels from him a few years ago and they have lasted really well still true after much winter abuse.

Stu of Penketh Cycles in Warrington. (Actually, a sole trading specialising in wheel building.)

I'm running 105s on open pros as my winter/commuting/touring (and, next year, CX). They've stood up well to my 13st battering about on them, so recommended.

Email me and I'll pass on his contact details - I'm at ourmaninthenorth AT googlemail.com.

Cheers

Tom

Dave Hinde!

I risked it and got mine there, IIRC it was £109 for ultegra on open pro, I ordered 105 and they upgraded me free.

I had some wheels built by Stu of Penketh.

Not impressed at all with them.
