Off to an uplift there tomorrow, do we cash for parking and a toll road as some sites suggest?
Also is there a cafe close to the uplift for lunch?

You'll not use the toll road, but will need parking cash. Uplift operates from a dedicated car park on the edge of the woods.
They do food for lunch at the uplift too

I thought you parked at the uplift place, with the toll road only for heading to the bottom of the forest to start the XC trails

You do park at the uplift but you have to pay to park

As you leave Hamsterley Village IGNORE the signs for the forest, head straight along windy bank road, go past another road into the forest and The Uplift is approx 1 mile on your right, it starts at the top of the forest.
