Ok , so I'm a gorrrilla armed with a hex key .

New bb fitted by lbs as it's pf , so I only had to refit the RF Turbine cranks . A decent amount of lube to help things along then tighten it, just 1/4 turn too much and I strip the  axle thread.

So now I can't undo it as the bolt doesn't unwind so out with the power tools and holesaw out the bolt. Hit the remaining parts with a brick to remove and have a little cry when pricing a similar replacement.

Merlin to the rescue , perhaps.

Shimano M1700 slx 1X cranks in 175 for 142 and 148 with a 30t ring peice. My BB is PF92 24mm and I run a 10speed cassette. The Shimano cranks are 12sp.

Chain line is for 52mm and the Shimano axle is 136 / 142.

At £53 delivered it's the right money , but will it work with an older 1 x 10 non boost bike?  I might need a new 10sp wide narrow if it keeps dropping chains but they are not eye watering expensive

Cheers

Sorry, but confused in what's happened here. What age is the Turbine cranks? I think they switched to ISIS about 25 years ago and then 30mm sfter that, but the bottom bracket is 24mm.

If you've mullered an 8mm hex that goes to 50Nm, maybe Shimano 5mm to 13Nm might not be the answer.

For that price you should easily be able to get some used XT ones, or maybe some older XTR if you don't need the ring (check the bolt pattern as later XTR are odd)

Hit the remaining parts with a brick

Not discounting the rest of the post either - I'm getting the vibe that bike maintenance might be best left to someone else

If it's a 30mm turbine just replace the axle. They are interchangeable.

2012 RF cranks. Deffo 24mm axle , same as Shimano.

Isis was earlier, up to 05 or 06

The turbine model I had was similar to Shimano hollotech but instead of the twin 6mm pinch bolts they used a 8mm hex socketted bolt that pulled the DS crank onto the axle.

The arm sat on a star for rigidity.

The Merlin cranks are cheap but I don't know if they used a longer axle for boost increasing the q factor  and pushing out the chain line a few mm .

The SLX cranks work with a PF92 BB, they'll also work with a 10 speed chain as the pitch is the same, just the exterior dimensions change.

The chainline might be a couple of mm off, but you'll survive. The M7100 is the standard axle width and 52mm chainline & 172mm Q factor, the M7120 have the 55mm chainline and 178mm Q factor

I've just ordered a set of these

for under £50 delivered unless you want 175mm arms...

From a brief test ride on a 12 speed GRX ring with an 11 speed SRAM chain last weekend it all seemed ok to me.  From other posters on my gravel crank thread finding similar it seems there is acceptable backwards compatibility of Shimano 12 speed rings.

I might need a new 10sp wide narrow if it keeps dropping chains but they are not eye watering expensive

Worth noting that SLX* chainring bolts are not equally spaced (as in not 90deg to one another), so replacement chainrings won't be as easy in the future - I managed to get a steel deore one so will last me till the apocalypse...

* I think all new Shimano are the same now?
