Just back from a week in Hexham and due to Ms Spanner still being injured did most of our cycling on the road (although Rothbury Carriage Drive was a really nice blast and the trails near Whitley Chaple were fun).
Rode from Haltwhistle to Newcastle on Sustrans route 72, the Hadrian's Cycleway and found it surprisingly enjoyable - easy riding and superb countryside - hardly any traffic either ๐
Anyone done the whole route from Ravenglass to South Shields? Would love to hear others experiences.
small world, i was in Rothbury all last week ๐
Nice innit?
Northumberland is rapidly becoming my favourite part of England.
very nice, peaceful and lovely weather, with the added bonus of great riding
Northumberland is my fave place in the UK.
No experiences with the route but doing the c2c both ways next year and will use that as the return leg
I live on the Hadrians cycle way at Wylam, for now anyway.
It's easy enough to increase tyre pressure and do a quick ride out to my mates place in North shields. Record so far is 1h 35m for the return leg.
Downside is having to ride through walker and the cycle routes aren't really direct. I normally come off part way and use the road to cut off a bit of unnecessary hill.
i drove back along the A686 and saw signs for the C2C cycle route (off and on road i think) some of those switchbacks are immense, no wonder there have been 20 serious incidents there recently, must be fantastic on a fast motorbike
Did it last year, started from my home further up the west coast. Good easy pedalling ride, we did it in tree days with a mixed bunch of riders, staying at Carlisle and Hexham on route.
The only warning I would give is if on a rare occasion and the wind is coming from the north you will have a very slow first day ride. Do not underestimate how strong the wind can get along the coast, it's why we have so many bloody windmills, it can reduce you to walking pace. Seen some pretty sick looking cyclists late on a Friday afternoon ploughing along the coast road. Not wishing to put a downer on it, just consider it when deciding your first stop, but if you are lucky you will bomb along at 25mph wondering what all the fuss is about. Good luck.
A friend did it in a day!
