[Closed] GXP BB - Not fit for purpose?

[#7196333]

I have had these on my bike(s) since 2009, when my Orange came with a Truvativ crankset and GXP BB.

I know they can be shortlived, and I usually get 6 months or so out of one. I have had a couple last a few weeks, in crappy winter conditions.

I fitted one the week before my holidays, have ridden it maybe 12 times, and it is 'knocking', full of crap and basically gone. Thinking about it, it must be my 15th BB, at £20 a pop...

I have had enough of them. Time to save for Shimano crankset.

Anyone had any luck trying on a claim of not fit for purpose?

forget that just get the Hope one with a GXP conversion (2 years going strong) Since swapping I haven't changed a BB in a few years.

yep I am with you, utter rubbish. I had one last a month earlier this year. It's mind-blowing that they can get away with such rubbish. If other parts of the drivetrain was so bad noone would bother using them.

Indeed I will change it for other brand/Hope convertor/other.

But, frankly, I want my (wasted) money back.

There's a couple of other options, I think Token do a compatible one. But I'd sooner replace the cranks personally.

Second/Third/Fourth the Hope Conversion. It's a shame you didn't know this before as you could've saved a [s]ton [/s] some cash and a lot of hassle.

Now I've only just done this last month but.....
I got the black box ceramic GXP with Italian thread...it's about £40...cut them open , took out the bearings and replaced them in my old casings., using a vice and a socket bit for even pressure...so far it's been great
I know they can be shortlived, and I usually get 6 months or so out of one.

Are you servicing them? They have a lock-ring to remove to get the seals off to make it easy to regrease them. Seems to work ok if you do, but then conversely maybe they let more crud in than the traditional (tighter?) seals.

Uberbike have a stainless BB for £35 or ceramic for £63 (or £50 when they had 20% off last month).

Yes, that is after a couple of wipe-cleans and add more grease. They are crap, I know they are crap, I wish I had changed earlier...

Just buy a Token gxp adaptor for a fiver and bung it in your preferred HT2 BB of choice.

Full of crap? Check your frame...it must be coming from somewhere and that suggests a large gap somewhere that is allowing it to collect...

Nope. It will be the seals letting the crap in. When I say seals, I mean the plastic things Truvativ describe as seals, that function as well as a wet tissue.

I know your pain OP. My hybrid came with a Truvativ Elita crank. The BBs would last 2 months tops. I went through 6 or 8 BBs and 3 cranks in the first year under warranty. I then replaced the BB with a Hope and a home made adaptor which out lasted the last set of cranks, probably because my LBS fitted it rather than Halfords (the warranty dealer).

Finally replaced with a Race Face crank with the hope BB. Fine for 5 years and counting.

The only thing Truvativ make that is any good are the hex key both sides chain ring bolts. The rest should be nuked from orbit.

Shimano BBs are cheap and seem to last me much longer than GXP ones did. I bought some Shimano cranks for my MTB and I've put the GXP cranks and (new) BB on a BMX that's hanging on the wall and will never be used. The SRAM BB will probably still fail in a couple of weeks 😆

I quite liked the GXP cranks too, it's just a shame about the BB. Hussefelt 40mm stems are decent as well.
