Sorry I'm useless at describing this so hopefully the image is clear. On moving up the cassette this pawl doesn't return to the correct position so when I click to go back down I'm hitting fresh air. Can engage it with my thumb and then it works ok. Given it a clean up in the mechanism but can't really get much access to it. Any thoughts? Don't want to take it to the shop if it's a simple fix.
That metal tab shouldn't be sticking out like that. Looks like it has popped out from behind the actual gear lever. It should be possible to gently persuade it back. Easiest if you've removed all tension from the cable first.Â
Feels like there should be a spring in there to return it to the correct position but it just flaps around. As I said if I move it manually to the correct position it works until I shift up the cassette againÂ
I reckon that little silver loop of wire that scotroutes pointed out is the return spring that's become dislodged.Â
That tab rests on the inner edge of the lever on most shifters, don't think it needs popping in anywhere (got a brand new pair of Ultegras downstairs, and several other sets too, just checked.) More likely it's snagged up on some thing under/inside the hood. Bar tape used to be a favourite. But it also looks like that hood is all over the place. You could have snagged it on the inside of that?
Yes that's correct Mert. The tab sits inside the lever. Don't think it's snagging anything but will have another look. As I mentioned it feels like it needs something to return it once the lever returns to position after the gear change. The tab just remains where it is in the pictureÂ
are these grx as susceptible to the horrible cable bend internally causing the cable to fray ? that used to be common on ultegra and stop lever returns.Â
Â
An easy fix and check prior to getting heavyÂ
I think trail rat has it. Had another poke around and can see frayed cable. Pulled a bit out and now nothing is shifting so I'm guessing the cable has gone in the shifter, which now looks like a right pain to sort.
get the hood out the way - take pull the cable at the rear mech remove that junkÂ
Â
at the shifter end - you can see the head of the cable . a small screwdriver or a pair of tweezers can be used to lever it out of there unless its REALLY bad. but ive only had to strip it down once for this. usually it can be done non invasive.Â
Thanks for your help. Unfortunately I'm thinking it's looking pretty terminal. That fraying wasn't from the cable, it was the spring on the ratchet mechanism that was snapped, sort of what I expected really. Hoping it's possible to service, just looked at what a new shifter comes in at. Ouch.
Bugger, yes. Cable fray has been a "feature" since shimano went to the concealed cables...
Just drives a cable change once a year for me, whether it needs it or not.
