says more to me about the collapse of our society than binge drinking, knife crime etc

Did you ever see The Beatles wear shorts?
Did you ever see Isambard Kingdom Brunel wear shorts?
Did you ever see the Sex Pistols wear shorts?
Stephen Hawking?
Churchill?

The recent propensity of the British to male to wear shorts and flip flops at all times says more to me about the collapse of our society than binge drinking,

The only thing new about binge drinking is the phrase 'binge drinking'.

One of my grandfathers served in India and never stopped wearing shorts once he returned home to his job as a market gardener in Huddersfield.

He said he always felt sorry for people who had to wear suits to work.

Also 44 tend to wear shorts most of the time, though I can't at work as its a food factory :/

I don't tend to wear flip-flops but I do find that a very strange attitude.

If you spend any meaningful length of time on a beach, you'd be barefoot?

I love wearing shorts and would love to wear them at work but I don't think it's allowed for safety reasons.
I always seem to be too hot, especially my legs and feet and they help me cool down a bit. I wear them year round at home and only wear trousers when I'm out if it's brass monkeys or a wedding or something.
I used to ride BMX a lot and you pretty much had to wear baggy shorts to fit the knee and shin pads underneath.
The shorts I wear now are still longer than the knee and baggy. Even in colder weather my legs feel warm cos of the extra length.
34 this year!

It's not odd, but perhaps unconventional.
Shorts when I can here.

Big John:

57 here, and still not decided what I want to do when I grow up.

Depends how hot the sand is!

I'll give you that!

But living in Wales and being on the beach pretty much every few days I've yet to get blistered soles.

Shorts on a man say something to me about where you see yourself in society. I stopped wearing shorts after infant school personally.

lol - spoken like someone who worries way too much about what other people think of them.

Shorts unless it's snowing, though I need to wear longs for work.

And I'll wear cycling tights if it's really muddy. Only when cycling, mind you.

Since moving to Ethiopia, I've only worn shorts round the house, or when out cycling.

Sadly, they aren't socially acceptable here at all. And being one of the only "faranj" in town I don't wish to draw any more attention to myself...

Never been to a volcanic beach then.

I will however rephrase, flip flops are ok if travelling to and from the beach or poolside. That work better ๐Ÿ˜‰

I've worn shorts and T shirt to work most days this year - most people are in slacks and shirt, but no one has complained so far (39 BTW).

Would like to, but personal rule is shorts only at home or on bike as it is unfair to humanity to inflict my legs on them.

Below the knee they are trousers you have grown out of not shorts!

For me, less is better. Hence I wear shorts as much as I can throughout the year (at home and out n about). No-ones ever had an issue with it - in fact, people often ask why I keep wearing shorts when it gets cold.

I think you need to clarify exactly what sort of shorts you mean. If you mean the longer, baggy, knee length MTB style shorts, then fine.
I gave up wearing the 1970's style short shorts because I find that, when you're sitting on the sofa, the sight of the twins playing "peek a boo" through alternate leg holes sends out the wrong signals when the vicar comes round for tea.

Very true ๐Ÿ˜‰ Shorts shouldn't be too short or the chaps might put an appearance in ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

"Shorts are essential to hard work, to hiking and to camping. They are less expensive and more hygienic than breeches or trousers. They give freedom and ventilation to the legs."

Baden-Powell, Scouting for Boys, 1908.

I still haven't grown out of shorts at 47 and wear them almost all year.
Proper shorts, mind, none of this knee length baggy nonsense that people call shorts these days.

Shorts here too, usually 10+ months a year unless it's snowing (though I did wear jeans more this winter, mainly because I realised I had some nice jeans that I'm never, ever going to wear out...)

Interesting to see when I was in Mexico that the menfolk in the countryside there never appear to wear shorts (and are usually wearing collared shirts too). Is that a Latin country thing?

I've usually favoured the baggy, just below knee ones, which I buy a size too large for the length (though I have some Carhartt YMCA ones somewhere too...)

I and about 50% of my staff live in shorts or 3/4 for work. We would think it odd if anyone turned up in shirt/tie/suit/smart trousers.

I live at the beach. It would be considered odd if I didn't wear shorts.

Nothing wrong with shorts, or dressing for comfort in general. if I had my way I'd never wear formal shirt/trouser/shoes for work ever again - literally the first thing I do when I arrive home from work is get changed.
