Grip shift for a remote lockout?

Has anyone converted an old grip shift shifter for use as a remote lockout? Having never run grip shift I don't have access to a shifter to see if it's possible. The new Rock Shox twistloc looks a good solution but not at £80- reports suggest they are a bit fragile.

Interested in any clever ideas on managing a dropper remote and rear shock lockout lever on the LH grip area. The Scott system looks good but I don't want a combined front and rear suspension lockout.

Ive got the twistloc on some Sids and it seems okay but wouldn't have bought it separately. Been using it with or without and can't decide if I need it

I'm not sure it would work unless you found a way to clamp the cable and remove the ratchet. Like any shifter it relies on the spring tension in the mech to return the cable rather than pushing it so you would have to find a way around that.

Unless of course I have this wrong and the lockout mechanism itself is sprung.

Lockouts I've come across have spring tension in them that needs overcome to "unlock" them
