i purchased a GD Turbo at the start of the summer and has been fine until recently.
i was at Afan last month on a very wet day and appears that some of the grit made its ways into the workings of the seat. It got that it wouldnt go up or down and would keep sticking.
When i got home i completely stripped the workings of the seat and cable and gave it a complete clean and lube. I put everything back together but now the seat doesnt work as should.
1. When i press the lever to drop the seat everything is fine and the seat goes down. However the seat doesnt lock in position until i manually pull the lever back to its original position.
2. When in the down position i press the lever and the seat should spring back into the up position. This doesnt work and i have to sit on the seat to release it to get it into the up position.
i have made sure everything is clean and have also adjusted the screw on the seat into lots of positions but this just makes it worse.
Has anyone any ideas?
Sounds like the spring in the turbo units sticking.
Yes, sounds spring related. Take the front panel off (use your thumb to keep the slider in place) and watch it in action.
I took the bit with the spring in it apart and all seemed fine. i lube and cleaned this prior to putting it all back together.
Would i need a new spring? Can i get one locally instead of getting one from GD USA?
They respond to emails (US website). I'd have more of a fiddle first, they are a bit particular.
Intresting I am looking at buying one of these is it just worth
getting the Manual version.
I have one of the original cable versions and it's been just fine. I'd never opt for the manual version.
Thanks for that Glen More Is it best then to go for the Cable classic or the Turbo as above ?
Once you get it working, to protect it from the elements...
Get an old inner tube and put the seat post through it so it covers the working parts. Then cable tie the top and bottom. Being an inner tube if you do the cable ties up tight nothing should get in or out, and it will compress and flex to allow the seat post to still function...
davejones - is that not what the protective rubber boot is for?
GD should already be protected from the elements as it come with a rubber boot pre-installed.
grantway - the only issue I've heard of with the "classic" is that the top collar sometimes needs loosened off as this can prevent the seatpost for rising. Mine is around 3 years old now, has been "serviced" twice (10 minute job each time) and works great.
I ditched the rubber boot one mine. It needed cleaning/fiddling once a year. I had it for 4(?) years (whenever they came out).
I snapped mine in half. I'd be happy to get another but I'm giving the joplin a try. Much slicker. Whether it's as reliable is to be seen...
GD seem to be really good support wise, it's a small company really and they're enthusiastic and helpful- worth giving them an email I think.
Grantway, definately get the remote! You'll regret it otherwise I reckon, I certainly do.
Could be the alignment of the locater pin. Have changed the position the collar at the base by screwing both ways. This is critical to allow the pin to locate properly and 'drop' into its hole
Cheers Northwind Thanks for that advice 😉
