Looking for a set of 700cc wheels to use on and off road, QR and Sram Xd with a preference for Lightweight over bomproof.

Hope 20Five? Hunt? Justridingalong? Superstar? Something else? Any bargains to be had?

Hunt 4 Seasons good for the money - as long as your forks don't foul on the 15mm std lock ring... (you need a slim Lock Ring if you have a Genesis Datum 🙂 but Hunt will send one if needed....)

If your frame is disc can take 40c plus tyres go for a set with 25mm rims. Sometimes XC 29er wheel sets are better on gravel/monstercross/adventure bikes and comparable in weight to one's not marketed at MTBers.

You can get a set from Superstar, Stans Crest on Switch ultralight (inc road freehub so possible to use road 11 spd cassettes), double butted spokes. Less than £400.

Sorry I forgot to say - disc hubs!

The frame will easily take 42 or bigger so I may well look at lightweight (xc) 29'er wheelsets..

Issue I found is that MTB rims will not handle the high pressures for road tyres.

Hand-built wheels using Stans Grail rims?

Pick the hubs and spokes that you fancy/can afford.

Or, a factory built Stans Grail wheelset. Just seen them on sale for not much more than £350.

You'll need to add the XD driver.

I've just brought a set, I like them.

Hand-built wheels using Stans Grail rims?

Stans Grail on Novatech 771/772 with CX ray spokes cost me about £370 from Spokesman. Recommended.

I have Hope 20Five (normal spokes not straight pull), given them some welly down gravel tracks and the like under my 100kg bulk and they are still perfect.

I went for the handbuilt Hope 29er wheels from Merlin. Mine are built up with Mavic 319 rims but there are a few choices. I went for this option as I needed a 9mm RWS skewer for my Escapade. I'm guessing they're more bombproof over lightweight though... 🙂
If you go for the same rims expect some swearing if you're fitting WTB Nano 40c tyres...
