i guided out there for one season (2010-2011) with Freemotion.

there are some fantastic bits to ride, but getting to them is the major problem. even with guided tours you are likely to miss most of the good stuff. the Freemotion tours are mostly aimed at those bored with the beach/not the most technically advanced riders (i mean like "ok folks, this is how the brakes work..." advanced) and most of the tours take place mostly on fire roads or asphalt. the Northern Trails tour is well worth it though.

if you are going with a group i would suggest hiring a car (relatively cheap if you look around) and taking it in turns to drive/shuttle. this allows you to miss out the grinding road climbs to get to the trail head and opens up the rest of the island to you. the island is a little like a wheel. the highest point is in the middle (hub) with the valleys and trails extending from there to the coast (spokes and rim). having a car means you can ride two or three trails a day, but you will have to drive a fair bit.

get the Kompass map for the island.

i've got to go to work now, but if you want more info email me (mail in profile).

J

Another thumbs up for Freemotion.... I rented a road bike from them when I was there in Feb... Quite reasonably priced and good service...

Just drive to the top and ride down ๐Ÿ˜€

I did that in Kefalonia (Mount Ainos 1628m) and it was awesome.
