Hi all

Some good friends are planning a long distance charity ride this year, following on from our experiences last year it has been decided to obtain some form of tracking device to show the groups location in case of emergency/ loss of comms.

Last time the ride was attempted in some pretty horrendous weather mobiles failed and the group whilst extremely fatigued, disorientated and late to their rv from punctures etc had us very worried (read debating contacting emergency services).

I'm looking for a small battery powered device that will work when mobile signal is absent and will allow us using smart phones and relatives and supporters to have 'live tracking'.

Anyone got any suggestions?

P.s it's all for charity and more specifically the cystic fibrosis trust so cheaper the better as it'll be self funded

I've got a SPOT device. It can update Facebook or an online map every 20 minutes or so as well as provide an emergency call out facility.

Cost about £100 plus another £80 ish for a years subscription.

It sends the updates via satellite so doesn't need there to be a mobile phone signal, if that makes a difference?

Sounds like it does the jobs required, just a bit steep.

Have found some trackers on fleabag but they are confusing to a simpleton like me

This is the uk and not somewhere remote and dangerous, but it is somewhere with poor intermittent mobile signal.

The use is two fold,

1. To provide an online tracking of the riders for friends and relatives at home.

2. To provide a location of the riders to the support crew to ready food for their arrival and monitor their progress etc

Interested in this as well. I ride mostly solo so someone else knowing where I am would be a good idea 😀

I'm going to give this a try next time I'm out:

but obviously this relies on a phone signal and of course battery life.

Found something Similar for the liephone.

Google latitude, untested and reviews say its old, but the biggest issue is battery life on phone.

You can use Find my Friends on iPhone to locate another iPhone (assuming it has given permission). This means you only 'ping' the other phone intermittently, but again does rely on a signal.

I think viewranger (free iphone app) might do what you want

What about a Garmin Gtu10 £149 with a years free subscription. Yearly renewals are £45 a year after first year.

That trackonthemap thing looks very good, would work with the I phones, just need to keep an eye on charge levels as its a 20+ hour duration (sdw double)

Definitely a short listed option.

This looks like an even better version of trackonthemap 🙂

SPOT trackers are very good, having used one when I needed to I'd vouch for their effectiveness.

Yeah Endomondo is good for live tracking - plus you get all the other stuff (live peptalks, workout statistics and, ahem, challenges etc). 😉

iPhone, Android and even Blackberry and Windows Phone versions available - free or very cheap.

Dependent on phone signal for the live updates obviously - but then surely every tracker is??

(unless you pay a hefty amount for messages via satellite like the SPOT tracker)
