[#1835543]

Now, I have done a search and found a bit of info on these subjects, but I am having trouble finding the best solution I think.

Basically I have a PAYG jailbroken iPhone, which I would like to use as a GPS tracking device whatchamacallit. I also have a Mac (but I do have a WinXP install on there) that I would like to use memory maps on (or whatever is best).

Question is, without an internet connection, which app (if any) will enable my iPhone to use GPS to track my position and talk to software, such as memory maps, to keep track of rides etc?

I have just downloaded the memory map free app, but it does not seem to work (does it need an internet connection).

Any help would be appreciated, it will stop me scratching my head anyway!!!!

It's a first generation iPhone? Are you sure?

In that case it cannot be used as a GPS as there isn't a GPS receiver built in.

I guess you don't actually mean a first gen one as they didn't have GPS!

I love my iPhone but really get a dedicated GPS if you want to do it properly. I do use my iPhone as a secondary device using the the app "QCTViewer" which will read Memory Map maps. Gives me 1:25000 maps without needing an internet connection. For the tracking and everything though the battery limitation of a phone is just a nightmare compared to a dedicated GPS unit.

Well now we know why memory map didn't work.

With it only being 10:30am on STW? You'll be lucky.

It'll take a lot more than lack of technology to gain that accolade.

The original Iphone has bluetooth doesn't it? If so surly a bt GPS device would work with it and Memory map. That's how I use my PDA. It has the advantage of working for hours and hours as there are 2 battery supplies and the PDA can be put somewhere nice and safe and the bluetooth GPS put somewhere it picks up the GPS signals well.

No idea if this setup would work with an Iphone though.

I'm in a similar situation too. I want to move on from my PDA which is a bit of a brick and very slow now that Memory map is available on a Iphone. Unfortunately my 2004 version of Memory map is not compatible with the Iphone app and I have the whole country, so buying a new version of that too makes the whole exercise quite expensive.
