Edge 1000 is a great bit of kit, but among the most expensive.
I'd advice (Sic) the same. The Edge 1000 is a truly excellent piece of kit.
If it's just guidance, then the Etrex20 is a great option and only @£100. I use mine globally, with open source mapping.
I´ve got an edge 810 and an Etrex20. They´re both good, the Edge is pretty much better in every way but then it was a lot more expensive. The Etrex seems much more robust too and I've certainly not treated mine well and it's fine.
Etrex 20 takes AAs so you're not tied to recharging every night. With a USB OTG cable you can upload tracks over your phone to strava etc.
