Any reason why I can't us a Road cable set with a mountain bike groupset?
Wrong ferrule size?
Cable too slim?

The road ones aren't fully sealed. The mountain-bike ones have a thin plastic tube running the entire length of the cable to keep the crap out, the road ones don't, which is why they're usually cheaper. You can still use them though, same sizes and that.
