[#2378876]

Looking for some decent shoes for mountain biking. I run flats so dont need spds or anything.

Any ideas?
The five ten ones look ok, has anyone used them?

I've had AM40s and the older black ones, soles great on both particularly like the extra stiffening you can put in. The older ones stretched too much and the uppers only lasted a winter. My AM40s are much better but the uppers have now got holes in where the shoe bends on pushing big bikes back up hills.
I may be getting 5-10s next, the uppers do seem more hardwearing.

Love my AM40's. Rather than retype here's a link to my thoughts on them: AM40's - Best mountain bike shoe?

If you want something a bit more budget (and they have them in your size) the Shimano MP90s are well worth a look. Same sole as the AM40s, and dead cheap on CRC. I don't know how they compare to more expensive stuff, but coming from a pair of knackered Duffs they've been a revelation!

Just bought a pair of Vans in the Jan sales, very happy with them.

How waterproof are the AM40s and the Shimano MP90s?

AM40s have a lace flap that helps on puddle splashes, they are not waterproof but dont soak it up like older 5-10 or MP90s to an extent.

The new AM41's are better in the wet with a revised lace flap and materials.

I find that they stay dry fairly well but like scruff says they're not waterproof. They are better than 5-10's that I've used. They also dry quicker.

The MP90s are ok, better than skate shoes but the AM40s will be waterproofer 'cos of the flap - I also have the DX SPD shoes which are very similar.

I tend to wear waterproof socks anyway

have a search there's loads of threads on this. Cheap Vans/Etnies (20 quid from tk maxx) with waffle type soles are good. Some recommend a Nike (6.0?) but I have an aversion to that brand. I tried 5.10s and was underwhelmed, any extra grip was theoretical as the sole is so stiff I couldnt feel the pedal under me so I had no trust in them (seems to put me in the minority, and maybe as a relative newbie I needed the confidence inspired by feeling my shoe grip the pedal). Santa brought me some AM40s but I'm keeping them for the summer and using old Vans for the gloop.

5.10s infamous for soaking up water and some say the uppers fall apart.

Theres also a significant difference in grip from different pedals. I have easton flatboys and wellgo Mg1s and the eastons have far more grip on the same shoe.

The A the M the 4 the T, all the way. Although my V12's have chewed up my sole like a rabid fox.

AM40's here - comfy, well made, grippy enough

I like the look of the 40's too

They seem to be fairly good at keeping water out - forgot to put on my Sealskinz last night and my feet were pretty much dry despite lots of puddles etc. I have had them swimming before though but they dry really well.
