[#4470230]

lets not discuss why I'm doing this, but focus on the practicalities of how.

Does a 7speed cassette fit on a std (deore MTB) freehub body?
7speed cassettes aren't a different width to a 9speed are they?

IIRC you need a spacer behind the cassette, and a 7/8 speed chain. Not sure about the mech pull.

You will need a new rear mech, to allow for the wider chain. Will last loads longer than 9spd. I used 8spd on my commuter and have only changed the chain/cassette once this year.

Shifters pull different amounts as well.

9s mech works fine.

8s lasts as well and more choice of cassettes and shifters.
