Currently running 2x9 on my commuter but never use the small ring, thinking of going 1x9 - will I need a chain guide to prevent dropping the chain?

Bike is an old hardtail which has been urbanised. Set up is X9 shifters, X9 long cage mech, shimano 105 crankset.

If I need a chain guide I probably wouldn't bother. Anyone done similar successfully without requiring a guide?

Thanks

I run 1x9 on my commuter. I just use an old front mech tensioned from the cable stop on the seat tube. Works a treat.

do it!

works brilliantly for me, go for a dh ring if you like as they are a bit thicker and unramped, i have a 44t version of this

youll want one of these

or one of these if going over 42t

I would say try it without a derailleur and see how it goes. In my experience it has to get pretty bumpy before the chain comes off.

What shermer75 says.
I'm running 1x10 with a Stylo crank and an SLX RD, and never dropped a chain, even on bumpy gravel. Using a singlespeed chainring might help a bit too.

And I dropped the chain once a ride at least, even with a ss chainring. No probs since the jump stop and bash

I run 2x9 on my commuter, middle and outer on the front.

The middle ring's larger than usual and the cassette's fairly wide range (11-36?) so I can get up any hills on my route, and then cruise along the flat high in the range. The outer ring's just for fun in case I want to go down some decent hills or manage to find a tailwind.

Basically my commute's mostly flat but I have the option to go over some fairly steep hills, so if that sounds like your area, then maybe give it a go before you go throwing your front mech and shifter away.

1x8 here. SS specific change ring with short cage rear mech and chain length adjusted accordingly. Never had an issue with chain coming off..
