[#10957521]

Building up wife's new bike, nice aero road bike thing. Rain plus poor lighting inside means I've had to move back and forth a few times, cutting steerer down means cutting down brake and gear outers or fancy aero stem thing doesn't fit. So basic bike build has turned into fairly comprehensive service, wish I had a nice garage I could do this in. Just venting as I'm annoyed. Agggghh replaced one inner cable and then the other one frayed and I've got no more.....😡

We've got a really nice workshop, and i'd still be happy if I never saw another aero bike in my entire life. I feel your pain, and hope that she doesn't want anything changed once it's finished.

Sounds like it's the aero bike fancyness, not the internal cable routing.

The last bike I did with that, the brake cables just dropped out of the hole at the bottom, but it's not an aero bike.

I’m glad I had a (detached from house) garage when I was fitting cable and brake hose into my new frame. That way the kids didn’t learn more new phrases...

The aero bit is annoying as tej cables need to be the right length for it to all work nicely. The internal cabling is annoying as the front mech routing working is more down to chance than anything else. It's not as bad as the caliper Madone I've done but it's still a pain.

I feel your pain. You want to try something like a Specialised Venge - internal hydro routing up the inside of the steerer, through the stem and inside the bars. If you didn't have your wits about you, easy to get the hoses crossed over, as well as cutting them to length. If you want to fit a longer stem, then new, longer hoses needed - a complete strip-down about 4 hours of workshop time. Even the right 'tools' are rubbish - the £50 Park Tool internal hose kit tool only lasts a few weeks in a busy workshop.

I can see the benefits on an aero bike I suppose. Though I get your frustrating with it.

Internal routing had no place in a mountain bike though!😡

cotton thread and a vacuum to suck thread through attach thread to cable/outer and marvel at how easy that was

Going to have a di2 or etap upgrade at some point. I'm hoping it's etap. Round two today once I buy some mineral oil.

Not all internal routing uses outer through the frame. Hello Giant. I lost the will on one of my Propels when swapping a groupset and left the last FD cable to the shop. They get a lot of practice. That bike is now rigged for TT duties with... eTAP TT. Fastest groupset swap I've ever done. Except the rear brake cable was a real pain.

Always use new brake cables, with a very sharp cut to remove teh MTB nipple and absolutely no kinking is my tip. Better still add superglue to the cable end to help prevent fraying. Slightest hint of fray - cut it off and start again. I found thread and a vaccum cleaner to be no use. Spoke jammed up the hole to divert the incoming cable worked for me.

I got the Jagwire tool as it was so much cheaper than the Park alternative

It’s always worked really well, even with braided hoses and DI2 wires

Not bad for £20

As above, just buy the park tool and don’t mess around with thread and vacuum cleaners etc, it’s just not worth it and you’ll wonder why you didn’t just buy it in the first place!

Got it. Just needed the knack of counter intuitively removing internal cable guide at bb so I could poke it through by hand. Now just need to shorten and bleed to brakes ....

Get some of this
https://www.amazon.co.uk/YNK-Protective-Suitable-internal-routing/dp/B07Z4WQY7D

Feed it over the inners before you remove them from the deraileur end

Feed new cable back through plastic sleeve

Remove plastic sleeve

Try a cotic flaremax seatpost outer. The frame almost got cut in half and binned.

Losing will to live, chopped brake cable down but rerouting it through bar was horrendous, now on third olive as lever keeps leaking. This is not a fun build.

The older specialized venge vias was my most hated job. Mostly ok with a Di2 bike or better with eTap but with gear and brake cables all in the bar and stem they just eat workshop time.

What bike is it OP ?

It's a Liv enviliv advanced pro, so ladies propel basically. Nice bike but designed by pure evil, 35 mins to get one brake cable routes through the bars, slightly bigger hope and it would have been a five min job.
