So the Mrs bought me a go pro hero. I've not opened the box yet as I don't know whether Iwan to swap it and add some cash to get the next model up, the 3 white.
Reading the specs though, the white doesn't have auto low light adjust which suggests that the hero base model is best when in and out of trees and Water etc..
I'm assuming that they are all compatable with the go pro software?
Also. Can I stick the memory card into galaxy tab and play the video files?
The white has wifi, so you can use the gopro app to control the camera and use the phone as a camera screen. Also the battery isn't removable on the basic.
We have the same question. 8 year old son wants to spend his savings and Christmas money on a GoPro (with me and siblings chipping in so we can use it too). Not sure whether Hero or Hero 3.
No smartphones here so that stuff isn't important.
For you though: don't swap it - your wife bought it for you and it might hurt her feelings...
Despite innumerous hints I didn't get a GoPro for Xmas - I decided to go for the Hero, auto-dim is a must for the UK I think, and whilst I like the app and screen I've never needed it for my knackered Contour and I'd have to buy a case on top of the extra fiddy quid and I'm tight ๐
Big difference between the Hero and the other cameras is the camera is fixed within the case and cannot use any of the bacpac accessories.
If you are filming your exploits and uploading to youtube/vimeo etc you'll not really notice the difference in terms of film quality. I have done a fair bit of comparison on the different cameras and have used all extensively.

Is the chest harness a 'bacpac' thing?
No the chest harness is a mount. Bacpacs include the battery bacpac and LCD screen. The battery bacpac is very useful.
