Following on from the great work we did last Spring I've arranged another 3 sessions with the park Rangers over Spring. Mugdock continues to be heavily used and it's a chance for local riders to get involved and put something back into the park and improve the image of mountain bikers at the same time.
The sessions planned for this Spring are:
Sat. 2nd Mar - meet point Craigallian Bridge, where the WHW crosses Khyber Road
Sat. 16th Mar - meet point TBC
Sat. 13th Apr - meet point TBC
The sessions will start at 10am and usually run until 2:30/3pm. It's not necessary to attend the full day, even part of it will be a great help.
Notes:
dress for the weather, waterproofs, food & drink, strong footwear (boots preferably), gloves
we'll have some tools available to use but if you have them please bring, spades, forks, mattocks, bow saw/handsaw, pinch bar
Typical work will include pruning, digging/clearing ditches, clearing fallen trees and patching up deep holes.
We had a good response from folks last year and I'm hoping to repeat it this year too. If you're interested then please get in touch with me at graham[DOT]anderton[AT}gmbc[DOT]org[DOT]uk
Thanks.
Ill come if you can promise not to let me do any heavy lifting!
That's great! You can carry the clipboard if you want?! ๐
Good shout son-of-mike. A very worthwhile opportunity for people to give some time to put something back into the trails that we love to ride.
As all Mugdock riders know, the place has become a bit of a victim of it's own success in recent years, with rider numbers increasing many fold, both through organised groups , such as us (GMBC) and Meetup, and individuals and family groups.
These maintainance sessions help improve sensitive bits of trail and probably more importantly raise our profile as mountain bikers being 'responsibe users' of the land
Will try and get along to the later sessions
(ooh, no wheelbarrows in the kit list, can it be true? The holy grail of trailbuilding sessions!)
As mentioned previously, we're planning the next trail maintenance session this Saturday (16th March). Please let me if you are able to join us so we can estimate the number of tools we need to borrow from the park rangers.
Here's the details:
Meet: Drumclog Car Park (opposite the Mugdock reservoirs)
Time: Start at 10am, finish by 2:30/3pm.
NB: It can be a busy car park so you may want to consider turning up a bit earlier or sharing lifts.
Tools: Bring what you have, eg. spades, forks, pruning saws/loppers, forks, mattocks
Plan:
After a safety briefing we'll split into teams (depending on numbers) and head from the car park towards Rocky Rooty to repair any damage to the paths.
The work we did last year has held up fairly well but we will be looking at clearing/re-digging ditches, de-berming paths and pruning/clearing brush.
On Rocky Rooty itself we may need to review what's required at certain points based on what we did last year.
From a review of Riverside 2 weeks ago we were able to clear most of the ditches and clear out drainage pipes but there are a couple of sections that look like they'll need some remedial work so we may need a small squad to head down there depending on the workload on Rocky Rooty.
A further session is planned for Sat. 13th Apr (meet point & details TBC)
Notes:
dress for the weather, waterproofs, food & drink, strong footwear (boots preferably), gloves
If we have a very severe frost the Ranger will make a call on Friday if we need to cancel and I'll be in touch ASAP to let you know.
If you have any questions then I can be contacted at graham[DOT]anderton[AT}gmbc[DOT]org[DOT]uk
