Not really followed it before. Is the last day more ceremony than race, like in the TdF, or are they still properly contesting that day?

Depends on what the stage is like and if there are only a few seconds between places.

The GC should be sorted by that stage and it is a sprint stage this year i think so shouldn't affect the GC anyway.

It can happen, Ryder Hedjedal won on the final stage in 2012, its a rare giro to have the last day as a competitive stage. I recall the Vuelta had a time trial on the last day not so long ago and the lead changed that day too. I think the TdF like their procession in Paris

Unless a time trial, final placings are usually done and dusted in GT's by the last stage.

GC should be decided on the Zoncolan tomorrow, depending what happens in the TT today. Still a few sprinters in so race for the final stage win on sunday (c'mon Swifty!)

Zoncolan on Sat should be a good one. I'll be watching.

thanks. Today's TT will certainly be interesting. When I first looked at the stage I thought "how dull, a short time time trial". then I saw the profile!

Lemond Vs Fignon in '89 was an epic way to finish though.

Now if only there was a time trial'ist and a climber, who didn't really get allong and a possibility they could get to Paris 1 and 2...............

C'mon ASO! Give us a Wiggins-Froome grudge match.

Generally if the time gap is over a minuite then theres no attacks on the last day, TdF generally more controlled than the Giro or Vuelta.

The Zoncolan stages are usually fantastic. Going to record it and watch it before the fight.

Nice weather + Decent ride + Zoncolan stage + big fight + beer

If Carlsberg did Saturdays........ 😆

Giro traditionally finishes in Milan, cos it's the home town of the sponsor Gazzetto dello Sport

it does make you wonder why the TdF is 'bigger' than the Giro...

Its been a great race this year, though I'm well p1ssed off with Eurosport's lack of evening highlight shows recently, preferring to put tennis on.

I knew Qunitana was doing the rope-a-dope till the big climbing came in. (and placed a bet at the right time 😉 )

Interesting to wonder who out of a fit quintana/froome/contador would have won this one, some really tough steep climbs over several days.

not one to suit Wiggo for sure.

I think a healthy Quintana with a full team's support is pretty unstoppable.

The TDF is Ferarri, an long-established brand with immense cachet that can rely on it's history and reputation to put food on the table.

The Giro is Lambo they haven't got quite the same laurels to rest on so they get attention by being mental.

I was on the Gavia/Stelvio/Martello stage on Tuesday, I could barely believe what my eyes were seeing. 'Epic' is a hugely overused expression these days but it was the only thing that fitted.

Nails, every bloomin' one of 'em.

Haven't had time to keep track of it until this week, but managed to watch all of Eurosport's coverage over Stelvio - that was just nuts, glad I managed to join in on an interesting day! 🙂

3hrs or so of on-demand video of previous days stage available every day.

If I can't see the stage I avoid the headlines and watch the final part of the stage on-demand the following morning. Been a good Giro so far. Quite happy Quintana is in the lead as it's a brutal set of mountain stages and he's certainly the best climber in the race and one of the top 3 or 4 in the world.

It's always been this way, the TdF was made epic by the amount of money chucked at it, it tapped into an era of adventure and sold masses of new column inches, then became more than a journey and bigged up to be such.
The Giro on the other hand was cobbled together by some right rough Italians and chased it's tail until GdlS took over and in an attempt to win following headed to the steepest mountains and played in there until a "tour" was scoped out.
Some feel it's always played second fiddle with the Vuelta a poor cousin of both, but latterly the Giro has become the preffered and GoTo race to follow just because of it's shere baradour attitude. I mean, who doesn't like to see skinny Italians scoot up a hill with a wiggle and flash of dancing shoes?

Best "Tour" by far IMO, more "passion" in 50k's than 4 days in the TdF IMO.

Most annoying thing about the Giro is that it's not on free TV (and I'm too tight to pay for eurosport) - highlights on Youtube are lame too!

It was pretty mental, the Stelvio was bad but the Gavia, if anything, was worse.

Oh yeah, FDJ, got it in one.

We were mostly following Geniez for the day. His solo bridge up to the break on the Stelvio switchbacks was pure blood and thunder cycling, it was heartbreaking that he couldn't make it stick til the end.

that looks fab - how hectic is it in the team cars? always looks like chaos if there is a rider down or some kind of break on

BTW, for those not aware, if you're watching the Giro online Eurosport Player, you can get a feed without any commentary.

Additionally, you have to love the Italian mountain soldiers with the feather in their alpine hats

It is pretty hectic, the convoy is in a constant churn as the DS's jostle for position and try and stay as close to their respective riders as possible. It's basically a race within a race.

The jolt of adrenalin that goes through the car when you hear your team being called on race radio and you know you have to battle through the cars, riders and motorbikes ahead to get to your rider before they lose time is quite something.

Slightly OT the original question but Giro related, I presume Quintana won't be riding the TdF this year then?

No Valverde wanted one more go at yellow. I reckon Quintana will be lead GC for Movistar next season.

Thought as much though seems a shame given his performance last year. I would've thought he would be a real asset this year should anything happen to Valverde.
