Since I bought my Giant Defy 1 disc in 2016 the rear wheel has sat closer to the non drive side stays than the drive side. Because the stays are different shapes on each side I presumed this was just the way the bike was made.
I had reason to take the bike into Decathlon due to a broken spoke in the rear wheel. When I cillected it today they told me the frame was twisted adn they showed me this using a gauge with 3 points of contact on the frame. On the drive side the 3 points didn't all touch the frame where as they did on the non driveside.
So Ive owned the bike from new, it hasn't been crashed and as such has no signs of impact anywhere on the frame.
Dercathlon staff have told me to make a claim under warranty but im apprehensive to do this as the bike is 2 years old.
Whats your experience? How do you make a cliam like this? The bike was bought from Wheelies online, do they need to have the frame back or could I go through a more local Giant dealer.
Thanks in advance, Nathan.
I had a giant anthem that was misaligned between the front and rear triangles (it ate shock bushes) and giant swapped it out in 3 days, so you'd definetely be in with a shout I'd imagine.
That said, if you're not getting any problems as a result I'd hang on until a patch of rough weather unless you've got other bikes..
Been a while since I delt with giant but most brands require / prefer you to go back though the original shop.
And also it will cost you less , useing your local dealer may end up with you paying there labour costs to process the claim.
But gaibt may be different so just check with them or wheelies
Normally first point of contact is the dealer you bought it from.
Most brands any dealer can process a warranty, but a dealer that did not supply you will normally charge for their time (most distributors dont normally offer warranty labour to dealers).
The dealer and then distributor will normally ask to see the frame back.
So the bike has worked perfectly well for two years without issue apart from the wheel looks nearer to one side? I'd not bother with the hassle of going down the warranty route & just ride on.
This is why most brick and mortar bike shops offer a free check within the first few weeks of ownership. Not only do they sort cable stretch but any issues you spot can be sorted. This is one reason that saving a few quid buying online is a risk over buying from a real shop.
I have a 2016 Defy Advanced Pro 2. When it was 3 months old I noticed the same issue, took it back to the shop I bought it from and they swopped it out (whole bike actually)
Giant UK sound awesome, giant oz made people pay for xray analysis of carbon frames. It's the distributor and their relationship with the main brand (plus cash flow) that you are dealing with
giant oz made people pay for xray analysis of carbon frames.
Marin did that for me here, no charge, no questions even. And not the dealer I'd got it from.
"Is that a big scratch or have I cracked it?"
"No idea, leave it with us."
Phone rings two hours later. "Just been down the RAF base and x-rayed it, it is a crack. New frame's on it's way."
Not bad warranty service at all ๐
Thanks all for sharing your experiences.
When my Giant mudguards cut through my Defy frame I took it to the dealer at 11am on a Sunday and by midday on Monday a new frame was on the way.
