Mrs arachnid is thinking about a new bike towards the end of the year, start of next. Boxes I need to tick, hardtail, alloy frame, reasonably light, good spec'd component set, sub £1000.

She has initially set her eye on the Ghost SE 8000.

I'm not familiar with the bike or the brand, does anyone have any experience of them? 😕

Any alternative suggestions?

Not had any experience with them myself but surely Mrs Arachnid can't ignore the ladies Canyon

Sold out at present but if she's not looking till later this year they'll have 2015 version out soon.

I've got a ghost amr7500. Had it about 2 years and it's been ace.
Not sure of the spec of that model but mine came with full xt. Hubs, chain the works.

Ghost are basically the German Specialized/Trek.
They are generally pretty good only let down by some of the finishing kit dated long stems/narrowish bars. Over than that spec is usually good.

The SE series is the budget range and the 8000 being near the top of that range. The next step up are the HTX series and my advice would be going for a lower end HTX over a top end SE... It's a much nicer and lighter frame.

The Ghosts will be heavily discounted towards the end of the year, if there are any left that is.

Re discount.
I paid £1600 for mine reduced from £2400.
I had to buy it with out trying but it paid off as it's bang on for size. Changed stem to a 50mm (from 80mm), popped some haven bars on, reverb and a spoon and it's nice.

That doesn't seem good value for a grand. The Canyon is basically the same bike for 300 quid less so you could buy it and upgrade the bits you didnt like and still have money to spare

Thanks for the opinions. We'll probably look at a 2014 model in a couple of months once the discounts start.
