ok - this seems a sensible method, but I'm assuming there is no real weight advantage - am I right?

it is so much cheaper than the other options to try tubeless, why isn't everyone doing it?

why isn't everyone doing it?

I guess because they don't believe it is just as easy & efficient as any other commercial method

have to 'redo' it when you change tyres.

I don't - I just pop the new tyre on the old cut off tube

how often do you add more sealent - it seems an expensive way to go to keep topping up every few weeks?

I use Stan's fluid & top it up every 3 or 4 months

Top up every 2 months with JRA Wheelmilk and you can re-use the strips. No weight advantage but you can run higher PSI with no loss in grip and punture protection to a certain degree. Getting the setup initially can be 'problematic'!

yes there is a weight advantage i am using 50g of sealant, stans is the best for longevity(still fine after 4 months, though I am trying an experiment with adding some car windscreen washer to increase this)with an old valve and some insulating tape- max 20 grams. so i'm saving around 100 grams per wheel compared to a normal tube.

I think weight savings are minimal with any tubeless system.

Increased grip, no pinch flats and no thorn punctures are the bonuses.

I have just done done a ghetto conversion with Maxxis Minion 2.35 onto a DT E540 rim and it could not have gone smoother. I am very impressed with the results. Running 30psi and so far so good.

JRA recommend Maxxis and from my experience they were spot on.

Just need to wear out my rear Kenda Nevegal and then i can do rear tyre. Don't fancy going ghetto with Kenda as it has very thin sidewalls.

At £5 a tube/rimstrip, re-doing with a tyre change is hardly the end of world, tyres last me ages.

The problem is that the more you add wheel milk etc the more you add weight to the system, eventually you end up with another inner tube spread (unevenly) around the inside of your tyre.

- Ghetto tubeless is lighter than normal tubeless and cheaper than Stans etc.

- You can occasionally find it difficult to get the correct kit for Stans etc to fit unusual rim/tyre combos, not an issue with ghetto tubeless.

- Ghetto tubeless is much, much cheaper than any of the other tubeless alternatives.

BTW, what is this adding milk every few months thing? I've had my ghetto tubeless fitted on my Ginat Trance for nearly a year now and I can still hear the Hutchinson tubeless milk sloshing about inside.

Errr wrong. I peel off all the old latex shite off the inside of the tyre before I top again so there is no extra weight added to the system at all.

As per the above post I have read elsewhere that the Hutchinson stuff seems to be very good.
