It's undoubtably been done before, but just been having an email converstion about this, so thought I'd share the pics.
If you're after a lightweight bash ring, but don't fancy spending nearly £40 - then just get an old 42/44T chainring and a file (or better still a grinder) - file off the teeth and you've got a basic bash that weighs ~70g.
Not as strong as a dedicated one for sure, but if you just want protection from the odd rock hit, rather than grinding it on a regular basis, then it works fine. I've done it on one of my bikes for riding at Stainburn and on my wifes too - seems to work Ok.
Looks pretty tidy - I'm surprised you don't see more of this type of thing really. I think I'll do one next time I have access to a bench grinder.
What a jolly good idea.
Yeah, I'd try and use a Raceface ring rather than a Shimano - takes longer to file down, but more robust for the intended purpose...
made an MRP type 1 style chain guide by grinding down 2 outer chainrings years ago but using a chainring with shift plates is ****ing stupid. next time use an un-ramped ring
