What are good all round tyres for xc/am riding? anything above £16 a tyre is out of the q, so basically which are the best maxxis/conti tyres? i use 2.2 mountain kings atm and theyre great off road but when im on loose gravel paths going fast i dont feel too confident. Or i'm just a wimp.

Your suggestions please?

Sorry!

To be honest, you need to spend a few pennies on a tyre to get a good one.

Loose gravel paths? Towpaths or something? Get a fast semi-slick.

The MKs look OK, but to my mind a little sketchy on anything looser than hardpack.

Fair enough! A valid point!

Hang on, what do you actually want?!

First you say you want 'good all round tyres for xc/am riding' and one post later you want tyres for 'riding on gravel paths etc to link local trails'... they're not quite the same thing, in all honesty!

'im only riding on gravel paths to link local trails' As in to link mtb routes. Im just wondering if my mountain kings are particularly bad on loose gravel paths as they feel unstable(to me anyway but i do have a bad history with loose gravel paths and the likes)and i get mocked for not pedalling much on them.

Maybe you've got them pumped up too hard (though I have heard they are rubbish). Specialized tyres are cheap-ish and ok imo.

Do spesh do a wire bead captain? Well impressed with the tubeless folders for £23 an end.

For £16 it'll be Ebay or the classifieds.
Maxxis Larsens are good the kind of riding (I think) you describe.
Or Bontragers - XRs or ACXs.
You'll just have to trawl the net for bargains
