This is what my eclectic choice has narrowed down to for a bike on the cyclescheme for commuting / getting around. Commute would be north Leeds over BWs, rough tracks, footpaths, road, Meanwood valley etc. Not looking for a road bike to hammer on the ring road, however logical the argument might be, ta ๐Ÿ˜‰

Got some lovely MTBs (FS and HT) and want something efficient, suitable for the intended commute (10+ miles) and a little different to the MTBs. Variety being the spice of life etc.

Any thoughts on these two? Apreciate they are pretty different. Otherwise I do the commute on a slicker-tyred Tinbred, which is fine, but fancied something else, for a change, on the cheap etc ...

Have a 58cm Croix de Fer, less than 12mths old, not ridden through winter, cracking bike/condition but may have to part with it shortly due to impending arrival of a Scott Spark and consequent lack of room - email in profile if interested. Also live in Leeds (Roundhay). 8)

Think it'll be too big though appreciate the offer (5'10", 312 inside leg). Figure I'm probably 54 or 56 cm frame at most.

Any idea of weight?

I've had one of the factory Alfine Roadrats for a few weeks and have been using it as my commuter. My previous commuter was a drop-bar cross bike (Tricross) and this time I decided I wanted a flat bar bike, with disk brakes and preferably with a hub-gear. The Roadrat was available on bike-to-work so job done.

The range of gears I've found pretty good with 45t up front and 20t at the back for commuting, however I've got a few sprockets to play around with as I'd like to have some lower gears available for the occasional short tour.

I haven't weighed my Roadrat yet but it's not particularily light - especially as mine now has a heavy Brooks B17 fitted and front and rear racks. It's not stupidly heavy either though and feels quite fast on the road. It's also a very nice looking bike IMHO:

Tourer (minus mudguards which I've not got round to fitting yet):
