[#1856351]

I've fitted a new 105 chainset+bb to my road bike (2005 trek 1400) and its all going well apart from a gear issue that I can't figure out. When i'm in the highest or one/two down from highest climbing hardish so putting pressure on - the gearing seems to be slipping....

can anyone tell me why? is it a barrel adjustment or the H or L screws perhaps... this gear fettling is still fairly new to me...

Cheers!
Andy

Enough wrap around on mech adjuster? Worn cassette? Free hub knackered? Chain knackered?

Thanks TheSwede - ironically it didn't slip before I 'upgraded'. The cassette looks ok(although its a 12-27?), chain is a new durace one. Freehub is fine I think as its just certain gears. Whats the wrap around on mech adjusted?? the top screw yes?

Thanks
Andy

Is that new chain on an old cassette? that could well be the problem.

Agree with the new/old thing. Try the old chain - but beware it may skip on the new chainring. This is not quite so common as slipping on the cassette though.

if the old chain is very worn you will shag new chain rings .I made that mistake and had to change a middle ring after a month

Right, I didn't think the cassette wasn't too bad but its done a fair few miles. It's an ultegra 12-27, how can I tell if it's worn??

The chain was never replaced and was pretty stretched!!

if a new chain slips on it the casette is worn.

If your old chain was more tha 0.75% worn the casette will be wron out more than likely

Thanks, i'll look to get a new cassette then! I bought some new tacx jockey wheels too which don't have any float... that perhaps doesnt help either.

more likely a worn cassette than a jockey wheel problem

Ah, anyone awaiting the outcome of this thrilling episode will be interested to know that a new cassette has fixed all my chain slipping problems.

Thanks for the help,
Andy

Yup - these days you just can't visually see if a cassette is worn unless severely ๐Ÿ™‚ Changin to a new chain results in mid to lower casette chain jumping (although depends what sprockets you use the most IMLO (In my long experience ๐Ÿ˜‰ ).
