The time has come to replace my gear cables and outers. I've done this before on frames with full length outers and have used the same brand of cable & outers as the shifters and mechs.
However, the frame in question has mostly exposed cables and this will be the first time doing this with exposed cables so, oh great and wise STW...
Can I use Shimano gear cables in Sram shifers (are the nipples compatible)?

As my frame has exposed cable runs with outers only running from the shifters to the frame and from the frame to the rear mech, as I'd like to replace both the cables and the outers if I buy a set of cables that come with full length outers presumably I can just cut the outers to length and save the left over bits until I come to do the job again?
Yes and yes.
If you go to any good LBS with your old outers they should cut you replacements from a bulk reel.

Or you can stick with full length outers by using cable ties, or less scruffy, BBB hose guides/clamps which fit in the cable outer stops.
