If I take off my old gear cables and replace them without changing any other components will I need to re-index them them or will they just keep working?
you'll dispose of their memory and will have to teach the new cables where to live.
(yes, you'll need to re-index)
Did this for the first time recently and no you shouldn't have to re-index.
Get the derailleur in the highest gear (tension off cable) before you undo the old cable, then put the new one on with just a very small amount of tension on it, but not enough to cause shifting to next gear. Tighten of retaining screw and give the shifting a try.
Thanks for the replies.
Am going to give it a go at the weekend, am a bit embarrassed that I've always got my LBS to do it in the past. Nothing against the LBS, they're quite nice really (for a bunch of roadies 😉 ) but I feel it's really a job that I should be able to do myself.
I'll almost certainly be asking how to bleed a set of Juicy 9s in a couple of weeks too 😳
Are you replacing the Outers as well or just the cables, also standard or sealed ( gore etc?) def recommend good set of cable cutters had a set of parks for over 10 hrs and going strong, also one of the 4th hand cable pullers but get the cycle or something similar the original parks are stupid price (£40???).
If you happen to be in wh smith or similar have a look at what mountain bike (I think, the one with the maintenance DVD on the front) as they have an actually quite useful guide to doing the gore cables but most of it applies to standard Clarksville and the like.
Need to do mine this weekend as well, inners and outers though. Where are you in case it all gets too much (and you have some cable cutters I could borrow 😉 )
Horsham.
And the only stupid question is the one you didn't bother to ask 🙂
Bleed video, I did it for the first time with no probs following this.

Bleed kit I used (alot cheaper than avid kit)

Don't need to touch the limit screws if they were fine before.
Horesham? Nowhere near Matlock then, still, if lasting 10 hrs and still going strong impresses, you clearly abuse them so badly they probably won't make it to the weekend anyway 😉

Just the cables, they run unsheathed 😉 down the underside of the downtube and under the BB so the only outer is the bit between the shifter and top of the downtube and a bit near the rear mech.
And the only stupid question is the one you didn't bother to ask
+ 1 for this.
Like with free fall parachute jumping, it hurts much less if you ask all the questions you can think of before you start 😀
