Anyone been down recently ? Heard it had been flattened. Worth blasting down or better over Harter Fell ?
I used to love it as a rocky blast but not been down it in years.
Cheers all.
Was up there last autumn, steep lakeland gravel road... we went over Harter. Not very upto date but I'm pretty sure it will be the same still.
did both routes this time last year, cheeky FTW
that carry up from haweswater is just horrible.
I did harter last year also, but Gatescarth was good fun as a descent. Going over Harter shortens the route too much for me. Only other option is up Mardale Ill Bell then the ridge down to Kentmere, but I did that last year too, not done NB to Kentmere for ages.
OH well, see how i feel at the top of Gatescarth.
I've down Garburn up onto Yoke/Ill bell, then round thornthwaite crag and down Nan Bield twice this year, think it's a cracking route. Some of the best views in the lakes, cheeky, but no one seems to mind so much.
Gravel all the way down to Haweswater, fast and loose.
Worth doing but careful not to over cook lower corners and washout!
Its sort of like Mammoth Mountain dual eliminator - fast drifting corners. It is fun but there are better kicks to be had with the height you've earned.
Carry, cough, over Farter Hell and do one of three things:
Hairy chested choice - ride all the way down the north side of Nan Bield to Small Water
Big mountain singletrack and rocks - up from Nan Bield to Froswick and Ill Bell and then down to Garburn
Or just ride down the south side of Nan Bield to Kentmere.
All are good.
Well went down it on Saturday. Ace. Steep loose and fast. Much better than hauling over Harter. Was a hoot.
