[Closed] Garmin HRM - nuclear batteries?

Looks like the battery in my original HRM is about to die (its getting more picky with finding my heart beat), it seem to have lasted forever so took a look at the Garmin stats.

Got it back in October 2008 and its recorded 16863 miles over 1385 hours

I wonder if there is still life in it if give the contacts de-gunking.

According to SWMBO, taking the garmin hrm sensor off the chest strap extends the life of the batteries - is this something that you have practiced yourself ? or is it just luck ?
